Trying RSS 2025-07-20

Social media in general has been an oppressively negative entity in my life for the past few years, and yet I continue to go back to it. I believe the main reason for that is that I have nothing I can replace the void and need to read, keep up to date with the people I follow, and to just have some low effort entertainment I can consume on my commutes or downtime. I think RSS would be a good option to try.

To start I've added an RSS feed to this site, which will at least give me a constant reminder whenever I pop on here. It's automatically generated using some ERB template I wrote up - and should be compliant with the RSS 2.0 specification.

Now to seek out some feeds to subscribe to!

Moving local 2025-07-14

After years of renting a VPS, and the shifting landscape in-terms of data privacy and erasure of digital ownership, I've decided to move my online presence local where possible. I've purchased a refurbished Dell OptiPlex 3070 which I will soon move all of my web apps, websites, servers, etc onto. As you read this - the words on this page will be served to you from a little black box sitting on my bureau.

That's you!

This has been a good opportunity to learn about DDNS and the differences to hosting using a residential broadband.
For now I've archived some of my older private repositories and moved a few, including the codebase to this website, to GitHub from my Gitea instance. I may end up just keeping GitHub for a while despite my hesitations.

Ode to Sleeping Eros 2025-07-10

This is a spell for sleep

Adorn a bay leaf with:

E R O S
R O S E
O S E R
S E R O

Burn poppy opium, and sleep atop the leaf after reciting:

O Eros
Lulling one
Slow the wheels of my thoughts,
So that I may hear the drum of your wings.
Grant me dreams of light, life, love, and liberty,
in your name.
